Junior Systems Engineer


Purpose:

Working as part of the Operations Team who provide in house and out of hours service for our internal and external customers. The successful candidate will be required to provide fault diagnosis and performance tuning for the Comtec (Europe) Ltd infrastructure in customer facing, development, internal and test kit designed by the senior System Engineers.

Scope:

The role will involve working closely with the senior system engineers and developers whilst balancing the need to deliver operational availability and performance. The operation is 24 x 7 therefore additional hours outside the 9-17:30 will be expected from this role.

Some travel within the UK and possibly overseas may be required

Main Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the hardware, O/S, software and connectivity in the hosting centre to ensure all systems are running optimally.
  • Diagnose faults regardless of their ultimate location, identify areas for improvement and work closely with the Senior System engineers and development team to feedback observations and findings.
  • Maintain system automations through script development, schedulers, etc.
  • Oversee capacity management of all of the databases, hardware and related systems
  • Maintain existing databases.
  • Liaise with clients to provide advice on implementation, monitoring and tuning of SQL Server infrastructure
  • Provide support to project teams on the implementation of new clients
  • Responsible for implementation, monitoring and tuning of critical SQL Server infrastructure within Comtec
  • Work with the Senior Systems Engineers and developers to develop optimized SQL, indexes, tables, stored procedures, etc on new/existing developments.
  • Investigate problems to identify missing/incorrect data.

Essential Skills:

  • Minimum 5 years experience with software implementation projects worth £over £1 mil.
  • Highly organised, excellent management and planning skills
  • Experience of estimates, proposals and pitches
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Good attention to detail, passionate about quality
  • Ability to lead both creative and technical teams
  • Excellent written and presentation skills for both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Highly motivated, self starter
  • Proficient with MS Project
  • Proficient with MS Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Knowledge, Skills & Experience


Essential:

  • Approx. 3-5 year’s experience as 2nd Line Support / Server / System Administrator, degree qualified, with a proven track record in a high-growth technology-driven organisation. Two years of full time experience on MS SQL Server projects. Desire to extend this experience by working with colleagues who have more experience
  • Good knowledge/experience with Microsoft environments and enterprise level implementations, IIS, How web-based applications work (HTTP protocol, troubleshooting same etc.)
  • Operating systems – VMS/Linux/Solaris/Windows
  • Experience in maintaining SAN Environments
  • 3 yrs. Experience of ESX VM ware and Virtualisation technology
  • RDBMS systems, specifically SQL2000 and SQL2005. (MySQL an advantage)
  • Knowledge of analysis tools such as SQL Profiler
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Microsoft certified
  • Proactive and confident with a strong professional image, excellent verbal and written communication skills

Desirable:

  • Development exposure, specifically to .NET based applications / services. (v1.1/v2.0 minimum) (java an advantage)
  • Familiarity with key web technologies/specifications – HTTP/Web Services/WSDLs/XSDs/SOAP
  • Internetworking with TCP/IP
  • Experience and knowledge in backup/restore technologies
  • Experience in network security, servers security.
  • Exposure to TCI/IP, Microsoft Windows Server 2000/2003,2008, Active Directory
  • Understanding of key performance considerations across the application stack and contributors to reliability, availability and serviceability


Salary range: £25k-£26k basic

Benefits: Pension, private medical, Life assurance (4 x salary)

Hours: Fulltime 37.5 per wk
