Comtec Group Moves into Canadian Market with Comnet Acquisition

2 December, 2008. Comtec Group Limited (Comtec) has today announced its fourth acquisition of 2008 – the Canadian tour operator content management company Comnet Canada Inc (Comnet). The strategic move is the latest in a series of deals by Comtec to widen the group’s international footprint and distribution capabilities for the leisure travel industry.

Comnet, which started business in Ontario in 2000, gives travel agents the ability to search for and book packaged holidays and charter flights offered by the major tour operators in Canada. The joining of the two technology platforms means that Comtec/Comnet will be able to offer the Canadian travel industry the most accurate content and effective distribution available in the market. Comnet will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Comtec.

"Canadian travel agents are in desperate need of an alternative tour operator content distribution system, and our deal with Comtec will give them the option to choose the distribution tools they need, not the ones they are told to use," comments Rick Cannon, President of Comnet Canada. "Comnet has always had the right technology for today’s industry but, until now, we have lacked the resource necessary to take on the incumbent tour operator content distributors. Comtec will provide that resource as well as bringing us the most extensive portfolio of leisure travel distribution services found anywhere in the world.”

"This is another critical acquisition for us as we move further into the North American market," comments Simon Powell, CEO of Comtec. "Finding a partner which offered us access to aggregated tour operator content was essential for our step into Canada: Comnet is this partner. It has a strong reputation in Canada as a sound, hard working enterprise, however until now it has been under-funded. Our focus will be on maximising Comnet’s capabilities and making a real mark amongst Canadian travel agents.”

Comnet Canada

Comnet Canada Inc. (Comnet), an Ontario corporation, commenced operations in March 2000. Comnet emerged as a result of the sale of EDI Communications Networking Inc. (EDI Comnet) to Axxent Corp. The travel applications that were previously owned by EDI were moved into Comnet. Comnet's two senior managers left EDI and moved to Comnet when the transfer of EDI's other business assets was finalized.

Comnet's offices are currently located in Markham, Ontario. The Comnet business model revolves around the premise that travel will continue to be sold through travel agents. Travel agents will have to incorporate new technology to support the emerging purchasing habits of the consumers or risk losing business. Comnet wants to be that technology supplier to the travel agent. Comnet offers a full portfolio of B2B and B2C products and services for any size travel agency.
